As the parents of the household, it may be hard to try and assign tasks to you and your partner, or even to your children. With the chaos of your day-to-day routine, your gut reaction is to just perform the tasks yourself. This, unfortunately, leads to oversights and overwhelmed parents. To get on track and have your family working like a well-oiled machine, try some of these tips on delegating for busy parents.

Make a List of Assignments

It’s one thing to say you’re going to delegate tasks to your partner, yourself, and your children - it’s another thing to act on those assignments. Instead, make a list of daily and weekly tasks that need to be done, and write the name of the person each task is assigned to. You might want to even consider having each person place a check next to the task, once it is accomplished.

Plan Ahead of Time

For those straggler tasks that you don’t need to do each week, be sure to plan your weeks and month ahead of time. This will allow you to have nothing fall to the wayside and ensure that everything that needs to get accomplished had a designated person to complete it that it is planned to do ahead of time.

Be the Leader of Your Tribe

Your family works as a team, but at the end of the day, you are the leader of your tribe. It is important to act as such. Be sure to have conversations with your family about their responsibilities and the importance of doing their part, and also extend yourself out to your family if they need help or have any questions.

Try Multitasking Your Own Chores

If your task is to do all the cooking and shopping in your home, why not try and kill two birds with one stone? Before you start your cooking for the day, take a look at what you need to get from the grocery store and take advantage of a grocery delivery service so that while you cook, your groceries will be shopped for you and delivered right to your door. You don’t even need to leave the house. If there are some tasks that are simply out of your wheelhouse, consider investing in home repair insurance and leaving complex repairs at home to the professionals. This will allow you to have the important tasks accomplished while you work on other things.

Be Strategic With Your Timing

Time management is essential as a busy parent. If you have already created a list and plan for your days, weeks, and month of chores and tasks, try and see if implementing a time schedule would help keep everyone on track. Try and time yourself and your family how long it realistically takes for each task to be completed so that you don’t stretch yourself or your family too thin.

Create Rules of the House

As a family that is delegating tasks to each other, you may experience a little push back. Try and create a set of rules for the house that both incorporate the tasks assigned to each other, how to communicate with each other, and even some incentives if all of the family’s tasks are completed in a timely manner.
